Genesis 5 ....introduction to Bible interpretation

GENESIS 5

Genesis Five is one of those chapters in God’s Word that most Christians want to skip over because it’s just the Generations from Adam to Noah….RIGHT???

Actually there are HIDDEN TRUTHS And HIDDEN MESSAGES ALL THROUGHOUT GOD’S WORD, and this is one of them.

I can GUARANTEE you that you will never look at parts of God’s Word and think it’s not that important.  The Apostle Paul told Timothy this in 2 Timothy 3:16-17….”16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”

So ALL SCRIPTURE is important, as you will see in tonight’s study!!!  Let’s go ahead and read Genesis 5 and focus on the Names listed in this Chapter of God’s Word.

Genesis 5:1-11…”1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him;  2 Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created. 3 And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, and after his image; and called his name Seth: 4 And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters: 5 And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died. 6 And Seth lived an hundred and five years, and begat Enos: 7 And Seth lived after he begat Enos eight hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters: 8 And all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years: and he died. 9 And Enos lived ninety years, and begat Cainan: 10 And Enos lived after he begat Cainan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters: 11 And all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five years: and he died.”

I want you to focus on the people listed in bold and the order of their birth.  Notice that between Adam and Seth you don’t see Cain and Abel…..there is a reason the names aren’t listed.

Here’s a link explaining the name meanings we will study tonight.

https://www.thebiblefactor.com/the-mystery-of-the-names-of-genesis-5/

ADAM means MAN or MANKIND

SETH means APPOINTED

ENOS means FEEBLE, FRAIL, MORTAL MAN

CAINAN or KENAN have the same meaning “some Bible versions use Kenan instead of Cainan” and means FIXED CHAMBER or FIXED DWELLING PLACE

When you put these 4 names together you get this statement….”Mankind (is) appointed (a) Feeble, Frail, Mortal Man Dwelling Place.”

That sounds pretty sad, but let’s keep going with the rest of the names in Genesis 5

Genesis 5:12-20…”And Cainan lived seventy years and begat Mahalaleel: 13 And Cainan lived after he begat Mahalaleel eight hundred and forty years, and begat sons and daughters: 14 And all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years: and he died. 15 And Mahalaleel lived sixty and five years, and begat Jared: 16  And Mahalaleel lived after he begat Jared eight hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters: 17 And all the days of Mahalaleel were eight hundred ninety and five years: and he died. 18 And Jared lived an hundred sixty and two years, and he begat Enoch: 19 And Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: 20 And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years: and he died.

THE NAMES IN GENESIS 5:12-20 ARE

MAHALALEEL which means PRAISE GOD or GOD BE PRAISED

JARED means TO DESCEND or WHO DESCENDED

ENOCH means TO TRAIN UP, TO DISCIPLE, and TEACH

So when you put these name meanings together with the other names this is what you have.

”Mankind (is) appointed (a) Feeble, Frail, Mortal Man Dwelling Place.  Praise God who descended to train up Disciples, (and) teach!!!”

NOW THE MESSAGE HIDDEN IN THE MEANING OF THEIR NAMES IS GETTING BETTER.  LET’S SEE THE WHOLE MESSAGE AND ADD THE NEXT 3 NAMES IN GENESIS 5.

Genesis 5:21-31…”And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah: 22 And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: 23 And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: 24 And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him. 25 And Methuselah lived an hundred eighty and seven years, and begat Lamech. 26 And Methuselah lived after he begat Lamech seven hundred eighty and two years, and begat sons and daughters: 27 And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years: and he died. 28 And Lamech lived an hundred eighty and two years, and begat a son: 29 And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the Lord hath cursed. 30  And Lamech lived after he begat Noah five hundred ninety and five years, and begat sons and daughters: 31 And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy and seven years: and he died.

NOW WE HAVE 3 MORE NAMES…LET’S SEE WHAT THEY MEAN!!!

METHUSALAH means A MAN SENT FORTH

LAMECH means BEATEN, SMITTEN, and TORTURED….and can also mean SLAIN, WOUNDING, and MY HURT based on Genesis 4:23. This is the First statement made in God’s Word either from or about Lamech.

Genesis 4:23…”23 And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.

Genesis 4:25 shows why we say that Seth means APPOINTED. There are a lot of words like PUT or SUBSTITUTE that you can use for Seth, but this Bible verse is the First time a statement is made about Seth.

Here’s Genesis 4:25…” And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.”

THIS IS CALLED THE LAW OF FIRST MENTION.  The first time you see a word or Name defined in The Bible that is how it’s used throughout The Bible.

Finally let’s get to Noah and I want to show you something that most people have never connected.

NOAH means THE SAME SHALL COMFORT US AND GIVE US REST.

Here’s the list of names from Adam to Noah in Genesis 5 with their meanings.

Mankind (is) appointed (a) Feeble, Frail, Mortal Man Dwelling Place.

Praise God who descended to train up Disciples, (and) teach!!!”

A Man sent forth, Beaten, Smitten, Tortured, Slain, and Wounded…The same shall Comfort us and give us REST!!!

HERE WE ARE IN GENESIS 5 AND WE CAN SEE THE GOSPEL MESSAGE HIDDEN IN THE MEANINGS OF THESE NAMES…..PRAISE GOD!!!

Finally we have Genesis 5:32…”And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth.”

JUST LIKE NOAH HAD CHILDREN….IF YOU BELIEVE THAT JESUS CHRIST DIED FOR YOUR SINS, WAS BURIED, AND ROSE AGAIN YOU WILL BE A CHILD OF GOD TOO….HALLELUJAH!!!

Hope you enjoyed this week's study and I’m sure that you will never see The Bible like you used to.  God Bless You All!!!
