Good News From God Ministries Bible Study Genesis to Revelation

Genesis: The Book of Beginnings Chapter Three- THE FALL Of Mankind and the Seed(s) Plot of the Bible

Genesis 3:1-5 (NIV).... Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”

2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”

4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Here we see the way that Satan attacks people.  The first thing Satan does is put doubt in a persons mind about what God says

If you notice what Eve said after Satan asked her this question she added to God’s command.  The Lord never told Adam that they could not TOUCH the tree of knowledge of good and evil but here you see Eve adding that to what God said.

This is why it is so important to understand what God says so that when we get tempted we don’t add to what The Lord said.

Satan responds to Eve and directly contradicts what the Lord told Adam.  Eve is told that she will not die because The Lord knows that if she eats from this tree that she will be like God knowing good and evil.

Genesis 3:6-7 (NIV).... “6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.”

We see a direct connection between the way Satan attacked Eve in the garden and what the Apostle John says in the New Testament.

1 John 2:16 (NIV)..... “16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.”

The Lust Of The Flesh- “the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food”

The Lust Of The Eyes- “and pleasing to the eye”

The Pride Of Life- “and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it.”

Genesis 3:8-11 (NIV)....”8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”

10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”

11 And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”

We all know how it feels when somebody tells us not to do something and we do it. We all have a conscience that will let us know we have done something wrong.  I remember as a kid when my parents would tell me to do something. If I disobeyed my parents I immediately would try to cover my tracks and make it seem like I didn’t do what they told me not to do.  Unfortunately for me my parents would always find out the truth no matter how hard I tried to hide it.

We see the same pattern here. Adam and Eve know that they disobeyed The Lord..... The Lord is calling for them in the garden, and now they are trying to hide from The Lord. When the Lord finds them The Lord is talking to Adam and he says that he was afraid because he knew he was naked and so he wanted to cover up his nakedness.

In a lot of churches throughout the world we see people trying to hide their sin by doing good deeds and works.  Unfortunately we cannot do enough good deeds to get to heaven. In order to get to heaven we need to admit to The Lord that we are sinners and trust in what Jesus Christ did for us through his death burial and resurrection for the forgiveness of our sins.

Genesis 3:12-14 (NIV)....”12 The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me,and I ate.” 14 So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, “Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.”

Now we witness something that still happens today.  Instead of admitting when we’re wrong we always try to find somebody else to blame.  When the Lord asked Adam why he did this Adam blames it on the woman..... and then the woman blames it on Satan..... and the Lord announces judgment that the serpent will crawl on his belly and eat dust all the days of his life, but it doesn’t stop there.

Genesis 3:15 (NIV).....”15

And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”

This is the very first prophecy in God’s Word. The Lord officially declares war on Satan and says that he will put separation between the seed “or offspring” of the woman and the seed of Satan.

When we get into chapter 6 we will learn more about the seed of the serpent or Satan.  This verse is a prophecy about the Messiah who will crush Satan‘s head and Satan will strike the heel of The Messiah.

Genesis 3:16-20 (NIV)....”16 To the woman he said, “I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.” 17 To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’

“Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life.18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.”

Now we see the Lord tell Eve she will have pain in childbirth which is why all women have pain when they go into labor to this day.  We also see why the man is the one responsible to work and provide for his wife and family.

20 Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living.

Here is where Eve officially gets her name and she doesn’t get her name from the Lord...she gets her name from Adam.  I think this is also one of the reasons why when a woman gets married the wife takes the husbands last name.

21 The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.

Here we have the first sacrifice in the Bible.  I think it’s pretty interesting that the Lord killed two animals and used their skin to clothe Adam and Eve, and the Lord also died for our sins so that we could receive everlasting life.  The first sacrifice was so that sin could be covered, and the second sacrifice by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was so our sin would be taken away forever if we believe in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior!!!

Genesis 3:22-23 (NIV)...”22 And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us,knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” 23 So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken”

Now we see the Lord forcing Adam and Eve to leave the garden of Eden and so that they will not be able to eat from the tree of life in their sinful condition and live forever in their sinful condition.

Genesis 3:24 (NIV)...”24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.”

I find this verse very interesting, and I believe a lot of people misunderstand the depth of this verse.  Adam and eve have already been banished from the garden of Eden by The Lord.

A lot of people think that Cherubim “guardians of God’s Majesty and Glory see Ezekiel 10:4-5” were placed there to keep Adam from the tree, but I would say that the reason Cherubim were placed at the tree of life was to guard the tree of life until it becomes available to believers in Jesus Christ as their Savior in the future.

In Ezekiel 28:14 we see Lucifer or Satan described as the “Anointed Cherubim”

Ezekiel 28:14

"You were the anointed cherub who covers;

I established you;

You were on the holy mountain of God;

You walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones.

You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created,

Till iniquity was found in you.”

Since Satan was a Cherub before he fell..... it would make sense that the Lord would place Cherubim at the tree of life to guard it until we have access to it again.

Revelation 22:1-2 says....”1. And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2. In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.”
