A Love Hate Relationship.....The Case For Esau Part 1
As I grew up in a Christian home hearing about God and Jesus Christ, one thing stood out to me during those years that played a BIG ROLE in accepting Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior.....and this fact continues to encourage and comfort me today as I am grateful to the Lord for the ministry work we do in Africa and the Middle East.
Living in a world that is so sinful and uncertain, as a believer in Jesus Christ as my Savior.....I am able to rest assured that I serve a God who loves me and Jesus Christ who is God in the flesh is the perfect example of that love!!!
I am so comforted when I read Bible verses like John 3:16 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John%203%3A16&version=KJV
or Romans 5:8 where the Apostle Paul tells us that “God commendeth His Love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ Died for US!!!”
and John 15:13 where our Savior Jesus Christ says GREATER LOVE has NO MAN than this that a man lays down his life for His friends. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John%2015%3A13&version=KJV
That reminds me.....I’ll do a post on the entire chapter of John 15 soon because it is misunderstood sometimes....but back to our topic 😎
When we know the Love that Jesus Christ has for us and the Love that God the Father has for us....we will come to Bible verses throughout our Bible Studies that will make us feel a little uncomfortable.
Some of us would like to pass over these verses and pretend that they are not there and just stick with the comfortable verses, but in order to grow in our Christian lives we need to remember that ALL SCRIPTURE is given by inspiration of God and it is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.....that the man of God be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto ALL GOOD WORKS as it says in 2 Timothy 3:16-17 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2%20Timothy%203%3A16-17&version=KJV
This is part one of a series that God has put on my heart regarding one of these “uncomfortable” passages in God’s Word. I do believe that we will understand the meaning and context of this passage and we will be encouraged that we studied this passage deeper to gain a deeper understanding of this passage 🙏🙏🙏
God bless you all.....And Here We Go!!!!!
The Case For Esau.....Part One
Some of you might be wondering why I’m even doing a post talking about Esau. After all the descendants of Esau “The Edomites” were some of Israel’s biggest enemies.
While Esau and Jacob were growing up.....Isaac favored Esau, and Rebecca favored Jacob
Even from the time that they were in Rebecca’s womb they were fighting with each other. “I always got a kick that when Esau and Jacob were born that Jacob was grabbing Esau by the heel......Talk about a sign of things to come”
The reason I’m doing this topic is because of a passage in Romans 9 where Paul is talking and using a lot of language and examples from the Old Testament and then you get to verses 12 and 13.
“It was said unto her (Rebecca) the elder (Esau) shall serve the younger (Jacob)” As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated “
If you’re anything like me......when you read that statement you wonder what happened to the God Of Love that the Bible tells me about???
Some people explain this verse by saying that Jacob was chosen by God for Salvation and Esau was chosen as a reprobate to spend eternity apart from God.
But I don’t think that it’s wise to make a blanket statement like that and I’m going to show you another verse that uses this same word for Hate.
In Luke 14:26 Jesus Christ makes this statement using the same Greek word (miseo) that is used in Romans 9:13.
“If any man come to me, and hate (Miseo) not his father, his mother, his wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.”
Using the logic that is given in Romans 9:13 in this verse.....it seems like Jesus Christ is telling us that unless we are willing to treat our entire family and friends ALONG WITH OURSELVES as reprobates....we cannot be a disciple of Jesus Christ and I know that isn’t Jesus’ intention in this verse.
So what could this word “Miseo” that is translated to hate be referring to???
If you look up the word “Miseo” in Strong’s concordance these are the meanings that this word can have.
Strong's #3404: miseo (pronounced mis-eh'-o)
from a primary misos (hatred); to detest (especially to persecute); by extension, to love less
I think it’s safe to say that Paul and Jesus Christ did not mean literal hatred the way we think of it today, and it’s not consistent with God’s Character to think literal hatred is what they’re talking about. It seems that the meaning to “Love Less” is what is intended here in Romans 9:13 and Luke 14:26.
Here’s an interesting verse that uses the same word (miseo) that I think you will enjoy to prove this point.
In Genesis 29:30-31 it says this regarding Esau’s brother Jacob.
30 And he went in also unto Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served with him yet seven other years.
31 And when the Lord saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb: but Rachel was barren.
So in verse 30 Jacob loved Rachel more than he loved Leah....but in the next verse it says Leah was hated.
Leah obviously wasn’t hated by Jacob.....Leah was loved less by Jacob.
As we end part one of “The Case For Esau” I hope we all can see that God loved Esau less than Jacob.....BUT GOD STILL LOVED ESAU!!!!!
Rebecca was told that she had two nations in her womb and that the youngest would be the child of promise.
Later on Jacob’s name was changed to Israel (the nation of promise that would bring forth the Messiah) and Esau was the father of the edomites fulfilling that prophecy to Rebecca.
In part two......I plan on showing how people in the Old Testament received salvation by grace through faith....and giving some evidence that you may find compelling that Esau is with the Lord!!!
I hope that you enjoyed this first part which makes a Strong case that Esau was loved less than Jacob because Jacob was the child of the promise......not because Esau was chosen for reprobation and Jacob was chosen for salvation.
Feel free to share your thoughts with me about this post and remember that Eternity Awaits 4U.....the only question is where you will spend it.
Romans 10:9-10
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
God bless you all and thanks for all of your prayers thoughts and support,
Your brother in Christ,
Ron Jr.
